Texas Defensive Driving & Traffic Safety Requirements
Under Texas Transportation Code ยง45.0511, eligible drivers can request a court order to take a defensive driving course (DDC) to dismiss a traffic ticket. To qualify, you must have a valid Texas driver's license, not have taken a DDC for ticket dismissal in the past 12 months, and the violation must not involve a serious traffic offense.
Texas requires a 6-hour defensive driving course for ticket dismissal. The course must cover topics mandated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) including traffic laws, defensive driving techniques, and the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving ability.
Texas also allows drivers to voluntarily complete a defensive driving course to receive an auto insurance discount of up to 10% under Texas Insurance Code ยง1952.052. The discount is valid for three years and can be renewed by retaking the course.
