New York Traffic Safety & PIRP Requirements
New York's Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) under Vehicle and Traffic Law §524 allows drivers to complete a 6-hour defensive driving course to reduce up to 4 points from their driving record and earn a mandatory 10% auto insurance discount for three years.
The PIRP course is approved by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles and can be taken voluntarily or as directed by a court. Courts may also order traffic safety education for violations such as speeding, reckless driving (VTL §1212), or aggressive driving.
New York uses a point system where accumulating 11 points within 18 months results in license suspension. The PIRP course can help drivers stay below the suspension threshold by reducing their point total.
New York Traffic Laws & Point Reduction
VTL §1180 — Speeding
Points range from 3 (1-10 mph over) to 11 (41+ mph over). PIRP can reduce up to 4 points from your total.
VTL §1111 — Red Light Violations
3-point violation. PIRP eligible for point reduction.
VTL §1212 — Reckless Driving
5-point violation. Courts may order traffic safety education in addition to other penalties.
VTL §1128 — Lane Violations
3-point violation for improper lane changes or failure to stay in lane.
