California Traffic Safety & Traffic School Requirements
California allows eligible drivers to complete a traffic violator school (TVS) program to mask a traffic violation point from their driving record under Vehicle Code ยง41501. To be eligible, you must have a valid driver's license, the violation must be a qualifying infraction, and you must not have attended TVS in the past 18 months.
For court-ordered traffic safety education beyond TVS โ such as for reckless driving (VC ยง23103), exhibition of speed (VC ยง23109), or driving with a suspended license (VC ยง14601) โ judges may order 4 to 12 hours of traffic safety education as a condition of probation.
California also requires a DUI education program for DUI/DWI convictions under VC ยง23152. Note: Our traffic safety course covers general traffic safety and defensive driving but is NOT a state-licensed DUI program. If your court order specifically requires a DUI program, you need a state-licensed provider.
California Traffic Violations That May Require Traffic Safety Education
VC ยง22350 โ Basic Speed Law
The most common California traffic violation. Eligible drivers can attend traffic school to mask the point from their record.
VC ยง21453 โ Red Light Violations
Running a red light carries a fine and one DMV point. Traffic school is available for eligible drivers to keep the point off their record.
VC ยง22349 โ Maximum Speed Law (65/70 mph)
Speeding over the posted limit. One-point violation eligible for traffic school if no prior attendance in 18 months.
VC ยง23103 โ Reckless Driving
Two-point violation. Courts may order traffic safety education as part of probation for reckless driving convictions.
VC ยง22107 โ Unsafe Lane Change
One-point violation. Eligible for traffic school to prevent the point from appearing on your driving record.
VC ยง21703 โ Following Too Closely
One-point violation commonly issued after rear-end collisions. Traffic school eligible for point masking.
California Traffic Safety FAQs
Is online traffic school accepted in California?
Yes. California courts and the DMV accept online traffic school for eligible violations. Our course is designed to satisfy court-ordered traffic safety education requirements. For DMV-specific traffic violator school (TVS), verify with your court that online completion is accepted for your specific citation.
How do I know if I'm eligible for traffic school in California?
You are generally eligible if you have a valid CA driver's license, the violation is a qualifying infraction (most one-point violations qualify), and you have not attended traffic school in the past 18 months. Your courtesy notice or court clerk can confirm eligibility.
Will traffic school dismiss my ticket in California?
Completing traffic school does not dismiss your ticket โ you still pay the fine. However, it prevents the violation point from appearing on your public driving record, which helps keep your insurance rates from increasing.
How many hours of traffic safety does California require?
For traffic violator school (TVS), California typically requires 8 hours. For court-ordered traffic safety education for more serious violations, the judge sets the duration, commonly ranging from 4 to 12 hours.
